I have certain disagreements with some of what Russell Brand says, mainly around the suggestion of total disengagement as a solution to corruption and some of his unusual ideas around religion and spirituality, but you don't need to watch his videos for long to know that he's done his homework and at least has some idea what he's going on about.

For instance, what the video that generated that headline was trying to do was explain the cultural backdrop behind people who choose to go and join ISIS. And yet a lot of people confuse understanding with sympathising, any attempt to really get in the heads of these people without caricaturing them as the psychotic killers they become in Syria makes general audiences extremely uncomfortable to the point of lashing out and ridiculing whoever it was that was making the point.

We don't like imagining people who do evil things with any kind of depth or complexity, and I think this gets in the way of reaching real solutions in a lot of cases. And the fact that any argument with nuance around the subject immediately gets simplified and ridiculed in the papers doesn't help.

Yes, ISIS is evil as fuck, and yes, they need to be stopped, but unless we're able to understand why it exists in the first place, then the solution we come up with will be ineffective and likely lay the foundation for the next big extremist group.

It might be a starting point for a discussion some time. That if you have any. I find your thoughts both deep and interesting
