So yeh - apparently they're really damn relaxed about handing out credit cards and overdrafts here, whereas even after a good 10-ish years of holding a UK account that had only been overdrawn once that whole time (by less than 50p), I couldn't get even just a small overdraft added to my account.

It's frustrating that I need a credit card over here - I literally couldn't buy my new laptop without it, despite having a debit card with the cash there and ready to go, which will instead be paying off the debt I incurred buying it on my credit card which I wouldn't have needed to do if they'd just accept debit cards because where's the damn logic in insisting that someone has to enter debt to use your service.

Like, that's the thing I hate about credit cards - they're a form of debt. Mobile, easily accessible debt. A pre-approved loan that shrinks and grows as you use it but never fully goes away because you're still paying to use it even when you don't. When you get to a point where people are using credit as if it's real cash and not pure debt, as almost seems to be the case sometimes over here, you create economic bubbles that WILL burst. Especially when someone can just waltz into your country from abroad and get a card approved in like 10 minutes like I did. They shouldn't be a necessity as they seem to be (can't get cars, hotel/motel rooms, mobile phones or computers without one) or else you're actively encouraging that kind of boom-bust cycle like the one that fucked the world in 2008.

Either way, they reckon my new laptop ought to be here within a couple weeks.

It's when a bank agrees that you're allowed x amount more money than you actually have, on the understanding that you'll pay it back ASAP.

I quite like this comic because we agree on basically everything with a few select differences, and even then I can just respectfully disagree because the only people you really tend to diss are extremists, and since I tend to stay towards the middle ground and also dislike extremists, I can laugh along with you. For instance, I am a Christian, but those idiotic "GOD HATS FEGS UR AL GOANNA 2 HEL" jerks irritate me just as much. Oh also sorry if I'm being too chatty, I can stop if you like.
