So I came to the realisation in the last couple weeks that politics is my football. I follow the ups and downs of the different teams, I have a favourite team and a rival team, I have a big massive contest that comes every few years with a few smaller ones dotted in between.

I used to wonder how people didn't care about politics, but now I kinda get that they probably wonder how some people don't care about football.

Thinking about it, it's probably not the best way for a democracy to engage it's electorate, but we'll see how it works out in May.

Maybe the football analogy isn't a bad one and should just be taken further. Have referees for MPs who can give out yellow cards for bad behaviour (fiddling expenses, failing to disclose conflicts of interest etc.), with red cards being given if the MP gets two yellow cards in one session of Parliament or commits one serious offence. A red card means they get fired, triggering a by-election at which they would not be allowed to stand, and bans them from from standing for any elected or political position until after the next general election.
