If I ever auditioned for musical theatre, I would have to go with "Hero of War" by Rise Against. Whenever I play that one I can't help but get a little lost in the story and the character of the narrator, cos you get this whole sort of decline throughout the song. Starting with a bored teen enjoying boot camp and being proud of being a soldier in the first verse/chorus, who starts to see/do bad things in the second verse, but reassures himself that he's one of the good guys with the chorus again, and then who finds themselves traumatised by the actions taken in the heat of a battle in the third verse and in the final chorus feels angry at the world for glossing over his experience and brushing him aside with praise, ending with him reminiscing about the time before the war and perhaps wondering if he should have answered differently to the recruiter.

I just find it difficult to play the song without playing the character, and although I don't actually cry during the song in real life, I can definitely hear my voice cracking a lot during the last chorus. It's a song that takes a lot of emotional effort to get into, and I think that's why I tend to leave it a while between playing - but keep coming back to it.

Playing "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" is a good challenge, but I guess sometimes you just want a song you can sink into.
