It's unlikely that the Ukraine crisis'll lead to something like WW1, but given that it puts Russian and American interests in direct conflict with each other, I could easily imagine it sparking another Cold War if Russia takes any action over the recent shitstorm in Odessa and Eastern Ukraine.

The main reason that the EU, Britain and America haven't really done all that much up to this point is probably because Russia is either the direct supplier of oil for the EU, or carries pipelines from other oil producing countries into the EU. So pissing them off too much would be all-round bad for Europe. Which sucks, because the situation there seems like it's only escalating, what with the witchhunt killing of nearly 40 alleged separatists in Odessa, and the shooting down of two Ukrainian military helicopters in the east.

I'm firmly of the opinion that no one should intervene militarily in Ukraine, but the direction it's all going in is rather worrying.
